everything to know about the holy month of Ramadan.
It is the holiest month for Muslims as it is believed the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed during Ramadan.
During this month, Muslims do not consume any food or drinks between fajr and maghrib prayers (at dawn and sunset) – not even water.
What happens during Ramadan?
Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food, it is primarily about being more pious and seeking spiritual closeness to God. Some Muslims spend more time in the mosque during the holy month or read the Quran. Ramadan is a time when Muslims are expected to focus more on charity, patience and being grateful.
What is iftar?
Iftar is when Muslims break their fast. This is done when the sun sets at maghrib.
What do Muslims traditionally eat during Ramadan?
It is said the Prophet would break his fast with a date and a glass of water before praying, and then would have a light meal. Those observing Ramadan are advised to follow a similar pattern by eating something light, taking a break, then eating again. This stops people from overeating and avoids overwhelming the stomach. Every year, doctors see hundreds of residents suffering from a condition that surfaces mostly during Ramadan – stomach cramps and bloated bellies. For this reason, doctors advise avoiding food that is high in fat, sugar, and salt.
What is suhoor?
Suhour is when Muslims eat again before dawn. Many hotels offer suhour, which involves staying up late and eating into the early morning. All eating and drinking must stop at imsak, 10 minutes before dawn (Fajr).
What happens after Ramadan?
On the eve of the 30th day of Ramadan, the Moon sighting committee will reconvene and begin searching for a glimpse of the new crescent Moon. If they spot the new Moon, the following morning will be announced as the first day of Shawwal – Eid Al Fitr.
The do’s and don’ts during Ramadan 2019

5 Mayand ends in the evening ofTuesday,
4 JuneDates may vary.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam which all Muslims are expected to follow, the other four are Faith (Shahadah); Prayer (Salah), Charitable Giving (Zakah), and the Pilgrimage to Makkah (Hajj).
During Ramadan, most Muslims will tend to wake up just before sunrise to eat a meal or some food and this is known as Suhoor. They will then not be able to eat or drink again until sunset when it is traditional to open the fast with a date and then eat and this meal is known as Iftar.
"All residents have to respect the month of Ramadan- which means adopting the following rules in public places during daylight hours."
Do's and Don'ts:
• No eating, drinking or smoking in public – peoples need not eat, drink or smoking in public.
• Don’t play loud music in your home or car – Ramadan is a time of reflection and playing loud music is seen as a sign of disrespect.
Tips for non-fasters
• Try and be patient with people who are fasting - it is tough and it is hot here. Ramadan is a time of peace and you should not shout or show anger.
• The roads do tend to become a little faster than normal just before Iftar time as people are rushing home to break their fast - take care or avoid driving at this time.
• If you find yourself in a taxi during Iftar be patient while the driver stops and takes a drink and breaks his fast. It is easy to forget that the driver has been in his hot taxi all day without food and drink.
